It’s Broadway’s way of contributing to the healing – because – Art heals the soul. “And we’re lucky enough to have a passion in our life that speaks to truth for us … that that future will open up to us.” – Andy Blankenbuler

Ilana Levine: Celebrating Women and Broadway with the Broadway Makers Alliance

Over a year ago, our original members met at BroadwayCon 2018. We bonded over our love of Broadway and the fact that we had all somehow taken this passion and turned it into a business.  We also talked about the challenges and struggles of running our own business and the loneliness of entrepreneurship. We shared a collective dream of a community. A community of people, doing what we were doing, that could help others.

8 months ago, July of 2018, we followed Lin’s advice “Make your own favorite thing”!  Our little group of 8 makers came together and formed the Broadway Makers Alliance.  We all hopped on a Zoom call, talked about our hopes and dreams, our struggles and strife in business land, and decided to create the community we’d been pining for, to support and foster Broadway adjacent businesses like ours.

7 months ago, Alisa dreamed a bit bigger and asked the group if we’d like to host a panel at BroadwayCon focused on Broadway Makers.  Of course, we said Heck, Yes!

6 months ago, we had our “debut” at Broadway Flea where we raised over $2000 for Broadway Cares Equity Fight’s Aid

And …

6 weeks ago at a little thing called BroadwayCon, the Broadway Makers Alliance hosted a panel featuring some of our member makers – who, unintentionally, all happened to be women.

Today – at the beginning of Women’s History Month, we are able to share it with you thanks to Ilana Levine and her phenomenal podcast, Little Known Facts(

Dr. Drama: Jelani Alladin – Wildest Dreams

As we bid a fond adieu to Jelani Alladin in Frozen – The Musical – Take a look at Dr. Drama’s (one of our maker members) interview with the new Broadway superstar!

“Making my Broadway debut was the most emotional experience of my life. For years you train and work your butt off, for this one moment; that is singularly yours and something no one can ever take away. It was a moment of absolute bliss, but mine was a shared moment with everyone who has ever poured something of themselves into my life. I was so grateful that day for my family, my past teachers, my friends and my current co-workers. The whole day I had an unbreakable smile.”

They are not owned by any one show, but used to tell many stories. Now these retired legs have a new story, with this Rent inspired message. “Measure in Love” this Valentine’s Day, and always.

A Makers Gonna Make at BroadwayCon

BroadwayCon is the ultimate theatre lovers convention, held in New York City each year. This year brought no shortage of Broadway celebrities, makers, and fans. The community of theater lovers at BroadwayCon is a wonderful smattering of every child and adult who may have always felt somewhat, let’s say, “different” at home. This is where they come each year to find acceptance and a family they never know exists. From panelists to celebrities, to volunteers and makers, each person leaves with a sense of finding something new and exciting. Dare I say, at BroadwayCon, you will be found.

Between the continuous singing of kids throughout the weekend and the random celebrity sightings, or autograph sessions lie something equally as unique as the fans who attend BroadwayCon: the makers. These are the amazing people who come to the convention each year to sell their creative goods. These makers make unique Broadway-themed goods like pillows with your favorite lyric printed on the front, crocheted dolls of your favorite musical theatre character, or a scented candle based on your favorite show. Some even provide services like blogs and podcasts, or even Broadway walking tours.

When a Broadway fan sees their favorite Broadway quotes or characters uniquely crafted by these makers the fan has a moment that validates this “different”, maybe crazy, weird thing they love, theatre. The characters and lyrics they experience on the stage and on the cast album don’t just belong there. They can be everywhere that fan wants them to be like the doll, the pillow, or heck there’s even a Broadway-themed fitness video. All of the work of these creative makers pays off for the fan.  When the maker makes, they create a world that says we’re different too. We love this and we love you.

Check out some of our makers showing off their goods in this TheaterMania video below with Broadway’s Jenn Colella!
